HMX-1 Presidential Flight at RAF Mildenhall 19/04/16
The President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, visited the United Kingdom
over the weekend of 23rd & 24th April 2016. On this, as on other state occasions, the President brought a number of
support aircraft with him. Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1) the "Nighthawks" based
at Quantico in Virginia & part of the United States Marine Corps were, once again, tasked to support the President
with airlift & transport duties.
My visit, on 19th April 2016, coincided with a flight into London consisting of three Bell/Boeing MV-22B Ospreys,
168284/02, 168332/10 & 168339/12 & two Sikorsky VH-3D Sea Kings, 159352 & 159356 & also
included two Metropolitan Police helicopters (Eurocopter EC-145's G-MPSA and G-MPSB) which escorted the formation
on its flight into the capital. The flight was a rehearsal of the job they would be doing during President Obama's state visit
a couple of days later.
