RAF Mildenhall 10th April 2013
This was my second trip to RAF Mildenhall in 2013, the weather had been abysmal
for weeks, the weather forecast for this day was terrific so I decided to go.
Not knowing what to expect, due to sequestration causing the massive problems it is in the U.S.
and with further problems commencing in the UK on the 9th of April, with the reduction in flying,
I wasn't sure whether I was making the sensible decision in heading to RAF Mildenhall.
The morning was really quiet, a couple of KC-135R's landed and there was a touch-and-go
by a United States Air Force Gulfstream Aerospace C-20H, 90-0300.
That was it then for several hours. Another KC-135R Stratotanker, 58-0100 departed mid-afternoon
and then at around 4PM everything changed. NATO Boeing E-3A AWACS LX-N 90449 started doing a
series of very spritely touch-and-go's and with those old smoky engines... lovely!!
There was a Lockheed AC-130 Gunship which landed at around 4.30PM which unfortunately turned
off early so I missed it! :-(
Before leaving I did manage to catch a Ramstein AB Lockheed C-130J Hercules 06-8612 landing,
so all in all a good day, especially after such a slow start.
Early arrivals were via Runway 11 until lunchtime when there was a switch to runway 29.
