The Kings's Birthday Flypast

Saturday 15th June 2024

The 15th of June 2024 would see the King's Birthday Flypast

over Buckingham Palace. A celebration of the King's official birthday which also coincided with the Trooping of the Colour.

Taking part in the flypast would be 30 aircraft which would fly, in formation, down The Mall & over Buckingham Palace.

This flypast would contain aircraft from all three branches of the armed forces, The Army,

The Royal Navy & The Royal Air Force, with both aircraft & helicopters taking part, unfortunately the

Battle of Britain Memorial Flight are currently grounded due to the tragic death involving

Squadron Leader Mark Long in a Spitfire crash on Saturday 25 May

so they were unable to participate with their traditional position taken in the flypast by

3 Eurofighter Typhoons flown by pilots who are instructors from the Typhoon Conversion Unit, where Squadron Leader Long

also flew Typhoons and each are his close friends and colleagues. These 3 Typhoons were using the callsign 'Memorial Flight'.

The weather, was very touch & go with periods of sunshine & then heavy rain. With 15 minutes

to go before the flypast arrived there were some nice blue skies but the weather started to close in.

At around 12.55PM when the first of the formation reached my position, it was, to say the least,

bucketing down with thick cloud & poor visibility.

I managed to get a few images of the flypast but you can see how bad the weather was.

At least it went ahead and typically, 15 minutes later, the clouds cleared, the rain stopped & there was some

lovely blue skies. Ah well, C'est La Vie!
