Lightning Twilight Run - Bruntingthorpe Airfield 04/11/23
The Lightning Preservation Group at Bruntingthorpe Airfield in Leicestershire, held another Twilight Run with English Electric Lightning F.6 XR728/JS as the chosen aircraft. XS904/BQ has been majorly disassembled over the last few months but it was great to see she's now back together again so there are once again two fully working Lightnings at Bruntingthorpe!
The event was again restricted to 200 spectators, but with the weather forecast not geat I think there were less than 200 spectators there on the day, we were fortunate in that the worst of the weather seemed to skirt the airfield so the event could go ahead without everyone getting drenched!
These Twilight Runs are held to raise money for the Lightning Preservation Group.
The LPG has 3 English Electric Lightnings, XR728/JS & XS904/BQ, which are the F.6 variant, and the third Lightning belonging to the group is the F.3 variant, XR713/XR718, which is the last uncut F.3. This aircraft has a dual identity being XR713 on one side & XR718 on the other, with different markings on each side, of the three Lightnings it is the only non-runner but is still kept in immaculate condition.
The LPG also now have a Lightning T.5 front cockpit section which they are getting back to the original, all silver, colour scheme, she is serialled XV328.
Amazingly the LPG have managed to keep both XR728/JS & XS904/BQ practically airworthy for over 30 years. Below are 40 images taken during the event :
