RAF Lakenheath Friday 22nd February 2019
A rare visit to RAF Lakenheath on a Friday but this Friday was very special.
This was the 75th Anniversary of the Mi Amigo crew, who were killed when their aircraft, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress,
crashed into woods in Endcliffe Park in Sheffield on February 22, 1944. They were trying to land their stricken aircraft
but saw the park's fields were full of children playing football so they crashed their plane in a wooded area just past the
edge of the park's open fields. The crash claimed the lives of all 10 members of the Mi Amigo crew.
One of these children was Tony Foulds, who has spent the rest of his life unceasingly caring for a small memorial to the
crew in the woods of Endcliffe Park, he had long campaigned for a flypast to honour the victims of the
Mi Amigo & on this day he got his wish.
Four Boeing F-15E Strike Eagles were to take part in the flypast in a 'Missing Man' formation, these F-15's
were already on 'Last Chance' when I arrived at 8AM. The names of the Mi Amigo crew were
inscribed on the nose of each aircraft as a sign of remembrance.
The four aircraft involved were 01-2004, 92-0364, 00-3002 & 00-3003 of the 492nd & 494th Fighter Squadrons
At around 11am the aircraft returned in a 4-ship formation & proceeded to burn up the runway!!
There was some other F-15E's flying with another 6 aircraft leaving mid morning.
I spent the rest of my day at RAF Mildenhall, a very memorable day all told, in some lovely sunshine,
it was surprisingly warm too.
