LPG Lightning ORP Pairs Scramble & Nightshoot - Bruntingthorpe Airfield 04/11/17
The Lightning Preservation Group at Bruntingthorpe Airfield in Leicestershire
held another unique event on Saturday the 4th of November 2017.
This one, held at Twilight, was an ORP Pairs Scramble & Static Run followed by a Nightshoot,
held in and around the former RAF Wattisham Q-Shed.
English Electric Lightning F.6's XS904 & XR728 were both to run at Twilight from the top end
of Bruntingthorpes' runway. This was due to the sheer number of cars that are currently on the airfield
at Bruntingthorpe. Visitors to the event were bused to the far end of the runway so the ORP pairs run
& static reheat run could both take place, thankfully, the two Lightnings were able to run in what was a
very restricted length of runway, about half of the actual length of runway that is usually available.
The LPG has 2 fast taxyable English Electric Lightnings, XR728/JS & XS904/BQ both of which are the F.6 variant,
the third Lightning belonging to the group is a dual identity Lightning F.3, XR713/XR718, XR713 represents
111 Squadron & the newly painted XR718 represents 56 Squadron. This unique aircraft is the last uncut F.3.
What a day, with the usual torrential downpour in the morning, which stopped shortly before 10am
to be followed by clearing conditions & even some sunshine in the mid afternoon.
