'On Base' at RAF Mildenhall - July 16th 2013

On the 16th of July 2013 I visited RAF Mildenhall. The morning, until around 11.30AM was spent outside

the airbase watching the arrivals and departures. These included base Boeing KC-135R Stratotankers together

with a couple of McDonnell Douglas KC-10 Extenders and also a Boeing C-17A Globemaster III, a busy morning!

At 11.30AM I was allowed 'On Base' on a pre-organised visit. We started off by spending an hour or so

with the 352nd Special Operations Group and their various types of C-130 Hercules. These included

the MC-130P Combat Shadow, the MC-130P Combat Talon II and their brand new MC-130J Commando II.

We were fortunate to be shown around the MC-130P and one of the new MC-130J's,

it was fascinating, particularly when comparing the old MC-130P Combat Shadow with the gleaming new MC-130J.

It was also interesting to see how much room there was on each aircraft's flight decks.

The next part of our visit was spent being shown around one of the 100th Air Refueling Wing's

Boeing KC-135R Stratotankers which are based at RAF Mildenhall. This was also very interesting,

particularly when discussing the role of the aircraft with the ground crew who were showing us around.

We were also very fortunate to be able to photograph one of the 352nd Special Operation Group's new

Boeing CV-22 Ospreys, which arrived back from a sortie as we were being shown around the KC-135.

I'd like to thank everyone at RAF Mildenhall, the 100th Air Refuelling Wing and also

the 352nd Special Operations Group for showing us around and also their terrific hospitality.
