McDonnell Douglas F-4F Phantom II - RAF Waddington 2012
The German Air Force sent a McDonnell Douglas F-4F Phantom II – serial 38+28 - to the RAF Waddington Airshow on the 29th June 2012. The Airshow runs over 2 days. The aircraft arrived on the Friday to go on Static Display for the weekend of the 30th June and the 1st July. I was there for the arrival. The specially painted aircraft, in rememberence of the 45th anniversary of the Luftwaffeninstandhaltungsgruppe 21 was from Jagdgeschwader 71 'Richthofen' at Wittmund AB, Ost-Friesland in Germany. The wing is the last F-4 operator in the German Air Force and continues to operate this beautiful aircraft until early 2013 when it will be fully retired and replaced by the Eurofighter Typhoon. Before landing 38+28 did a couple of fly-throughs, one with arrestor hook down, the second was FAST and in full reheat, with all the moisture in the air it was an event that will live long in the memory!
